At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a group of 10 soldiers posed in front of a Sibley tent. One man seems to be writing or drawing, others are holding guns, and another is picking at his feet with a knife. Numeric notations on recto: "10" and "2413." Inscription on verso: "Near view of a 'Sibley' tent." Numeric notations on verso: "10" and "105."
