At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A Baptist church stands at what seems to be the end of a road, with houses set to each side of it. A covered wagon sits, apparantly ready to unload parishiners, while a man on horseback peers intently at it. Inscription on verso: "Bapti." Numeric notation on verso: "135."
