Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

McArthur wears his hat and his sword hangs from his belt. His left arm is bent with his left hand on his hip, his right arm is extended and his right hand rests on something outside the image. Inscription on verso: "Col. McArthur. 12th Regt Ill Vols." The image has been painted.
