Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A mounted image of Crown Nest signal tower. Several men stand at the top of the tower and two stand on the ground below. A wagon and four tents stand just to the right of the tower. The inscription below identifies the image as "'Crown Nest' - Signal tower on bank of James River on right of Bermuda Hundred lines." There are pencil notations on the side of the image regarding how it is to be reduced in size: "Cut new oval 3" in di x 4" high - taking in as indicated" and "3" oval." Inscriptions on recto: "Battery Look Out"; "signal #2272"; "P1"; and "351A." Stamp of the Century Comapny on verso. Numeric notations on verso: "VIII" and "331."
