Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

From the Chattanooga Campaign. Shows 12 officers in front of three cabins. Two of the cabins are made of logs, one of which has a canvas roof while the other has a roof made of wooded shingles. The other cabin is made of planks. Hooker stands in the center and two men to his right is Gen. Butterfield.
