At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed "Mack," by Leaming. Depicts Leaming, who served during the Civil War as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry at Fort Pillow, Tennessee. He is portrayed wearing a long beard and civilian clothing. Leaming's signed inscription, "Your affectionate Son" indicates that this photograph was intended for one or both of his parents, (Marry or Polly) Tucker Leaming and D. M. Leaming.
