At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from Camp White Oak Church. Colonel Bidwell of the 49th New York Volunteers writes to Sprague, Adjutant General of the State of New York. Attests that John C. White is "a worthy and efficient man and one who has distinguished himself in service." Argues for White's promotion.
