At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes while on his way home via ambulance. Relates that he is still having problems with his leg. Thinks that he should not have left Nashville but the Confederates were too close to the city and could be seen from the hospital. Is sorry to hear that so many from their town have been crippled in the war.
