At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unmounted photographs of Atlanta, Kennesaw, Resaca and environs during Union occupation in the Fall of 1864. Nos. 1 and 2 are a composite photograph of Kennesaw Mountain, taken shortly after the battle (illustrated in Voices of the Civil War: Atlanta, Time-Life, 1996, pp. 74-75).
