At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

[Written as Librarian of the St. Louis Public Library.] Photograph of General Grant, Julia Grant, Martin Wilkins and four others on the veranda of his Long Branch summer home. [The letter explains that the image formerly hung at St. Michael Rectory in Litchfield, CT and that is where he learned its history.]

Citation Guidelines for Online Resources

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction.
