At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes following the death of his father, Apollos Griffin. Has delayed writing in hopes he may obtain permission to go to Washington (possibly where his mother is located). Writes, "He alone whom it has pleased to take away a devoted husband, kind parent and valued citizen can console the widow and the child for the loss- Tears only show sympathy but do not relieve the aching heart... I know that no mortal utterance can give the required consolation..." Written on Headquarters, 1st Division, 5th Corps stationery.
