At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Newspapers report that Lord Howe has declined to be Peace Commissioner to the United States and has asked to be recalled. The British are adopting a new strategy. Quebec, Halifax, New York and Rhode Island are to be made secure. It is rumored that the Spanish, like the Dutch, will remain neutral.
