At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Enclosed a bill of exchange [Not in collection]. Hughes will sail for Halifax on the "Vallas" and D'Auvergne hopes Bellie will go with him. He asks: "What be the consequence of Lord N: speech, War or Peace? [. . . . ] [T]he temper of the Americans, will they treat with us upon such terms as Lord N: proposes?"
