At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Six volumes of a series entitled, "Information respecting the history condition and prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States," published in 1853- 1957. Contains the results of a study commissioned by Congress to collect statistics on the condition of indigenous peoples of the United States. Volumes 1-4 are signed by the author and inscribed to Clamor Hagedorn. Volume 1 contains 568 p. ; volume 2 contains 608 p. ; volume 3 contains 635 p. ; volume 4 contains 668 p. ; volume 5 contains 712 p. ; volume 6 contains 756 p.
