At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Duplicate letter, not in Leslie's hand. Discusses the news companies in New York City in reply to Cripps' inquiry about the franchising of news publications. Leslie explains how the publisher and news company chain of command works. Sends Cripps a copy of his and the American News Co.'s news circulars (not included). Signed "Frank Leslie per J.S. Thrasher." Written on Oficinas de las Publicaciones de Frank Leslie letterhead, advertising his publication, Ilustracion. Company envelope is postmarked 29 June, Habana, and includes two ten-cent stamps reading "Ultramar" and depicting a crowned woman.
