At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his brother from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Reports there will be a grand review of the entire army next week and a review of their division this afternoon. Hopes troops will be sent home after the review. Writes it may be some time before he gets to go home. Discusses his colts back home. The letter has a watermark on the top left hand corner.
