At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his sister from Camp Biddle. Complains that he has only received one letter from her. Comments that he received a "kind" letter from Edwin yesterday but none from her. Writes that their tent is comfortable and that they have a flower in it. Wishes her well and ask that she writes him back. Letter is damaged causing minor text loss.
