At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by his cousin Mary. She is very glad to hear from him. She apologizes for not having mailed a long letter she had written for him, she found it in her desk sealed. She hopes and prays that he will return home safely. She will write him a long letter soon. States that her heart "aches" for the soldiers in the war.
