Begins letter to his wife and children by expressing great sadness that he has not received any letters from them. "I begin to think that you have withdrawn from me because I have been in the guardhouse..." Continues on with his complaints about how soldiers are treated by the officers. Tells her about a soldier who was injured and "the doctors wont excuse him from duty and I said that I would like to shoot them..." Mentions his desire to shoot the officers again later in letter. Writes them "to day is mail day again and if I dont get a letter from you this time, I hate to make rash promises but I am afraid that I shall say hard things and think harder before I shall write you again for this makes six or seven letters and no answer from you to no eny thing what is the matter or whare you are nor who you are with nor wether thare is eny thing of you left to write and I dont want to fool my time to write to eny body that has blown away or dried up and cant write back..." Next page of letter is dated 1 September. Includes a chain for Burty, possibly his son, and notes that he "will send sister something next time so tel her not to cry..."
