Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Frank T. Holbrook to Frances Davenport dated May 25, 1865. Informs her that he met the paymaster of the 105th Penn today who informed him that the Regt. Belongs to the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, 2nd Corps, stationed about 4 miles from Long Bridge, near the Pike. In going there he says she should keep to the right hand road and says that the commander is Gen Pierce.
