Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Thomas H. Downs to Frances Davenport dated May 24, 1865. Downs is the surgeon who treated her husband's wounds in the hospital. Informs her that her husband George was taken to the hospital of 3rd Division 2nd Corps by mistake. All of the wounded were removed and taken to Fredericksburg where George survived for a further two days.
