At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mrs. H.M. Dudley to Frances Davenport dated April 24, 1865. Went to the War Department to try and secure passes to the front so that Frances could visit Fredericksburg where her husband George was buried after being shot in the back of the head during the Battle of the Wilderness.
