At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addresses Albert as "Dear Sir." Tells him to take his time getting to her, but informs him of her schedule. Letter is quite short, but does include in the postscript that "now dont think that I dont care to see you for it seems as though the days will wear so heavily. The more I look at your picture the better it looks to me & I cant hardly let it alone."
