At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests that the "81st, 92d, 93d, 94th, 95th, 96th, 97th, 98th, 100th, 101st, 102nd and 103d Regiments of New York Volunteers, may be forwarded to this city as rapidly as possible." These regiments were needed for the Peninsula campaign, which was launched two weeks later.
