At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt stating George Winn, the administrator of Mildred Bradshaw's estate, had paid a seventy five dollar debt owed by the estate. An enslaved person from the estate was being held as collateral until the debt was paid. Creasy signs with his mark. Also signed by a witness, name illegible.
