At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One document stating the terms by which people enslaved by John Winn would be hired out for work. Lists their names and amount charged, and names of the people requesting their labor. Document also states that they would be given winter clothes and not to work on rivers or island. Included in these terms were people enslaved by Elias Willis and Thomas Drummond.
