At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Convers states that although he originally asked to purchase a piece of land to the north, that land is so close to Ephram Reynolds's estate that it would be best if Reynolds had that land himself. He therefore describes a different tract of land to the east and asks if he could have that one instead. The docket acknowledges that Robert, Jr. consented to the proposition.
