Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The letter is preceeded by a copy of a former letter dated 31 July 1740, in which Storke enclosed the account of sales from the Ship Oswego. He also mentions that the war has made the seas quite dangerous, and privateers have taken many vessels already. Docketed on address leaf.
