At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thong writes that Schermerhoren is with him, but in poor circumstances, and requests that Robert send down a bond with its principle and interest as soon as possible. He notes that he has taken care of most of his debt, but was forced to take a sloop from Schermerhoren.
