At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Jo[h]anna writes that a ship recently arrived from England with news of peace and that Coll Nicholson is coming to establish a government in Annapolis, in which Samuel Vetch will have his own company. She also mentions the engagement of her brother John, and describes Elizabeth Knight as a woman with a very "stone" [strong] character.
