At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bill for £16 1 shilling 4 pence following the trial of "4 negroes for murder." Fees were included for such items as "Suppoena for [11 witnesses]" "Swearing the above 11 witnesses before the grand Jury" "Swearing an officer to keep the Jury" and "Taking & Entering the Verdict."
