At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An expansion of Livingston's original tract of land at the Roeloffe Johnsons Kill to add an additional 600 acres of land (these being adjacent to the furthest expanse of the Province of New York on the border with Connecticut, but not adjacent to his previous grant of land) for an annual rent of eight shillings.
