Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed "Ike" and addressed to "My darling." Expresses his happiness at receiving a long letter from her. Comments that he has not heard from their son John. Mentions being interrupted often by staff and by a telephone call from P.M. [Prime Minister Winston Churchill] while writing to her. Discusses personal matters and sending someone regards on their 50th anniversary. Written as General in command of allied forces, Shaef Headquarters, Bushey Park, England. Censored by himself on the envelope. Year from received stamp on envelope. Written in Bushy Park.
