Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Miller has not written in a while. She scathingly opens "You spoke as if you had only received my letter a week ago. I had written at least a month when I had the pleasure of receiving yours." Because she is soon expecting company, she has time to only hurriedly disclose the latest gossip.
