At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

J. Henry Flitner writes to his sister Mary Flitner from the Adams House in Boston, Massachusetts to update her on his travel itinerary. In his letter, Flitner also complains about the lack of options and cost of lodging in his present location. This is the only address leaf found in the collection.
