Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed certificate of the U.S. Treasury filled out by hand. Patriotic $50 donation by soldier Alfred T. Jackson of Co. D of the 1st Regiment of Kansas Mounted Infantry indicated to be the "amount of his savings as a soldier." Spinner was treasurer of the United States.
