At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Enclosing a note regarding a case that he wishes Knox to deal with. "You will be pleased to take up the matter in question, have a fair investigation made into the Merits of it, and cause justice to be done to the Individual concerned, as well as the Public." A endorsement in the hand of Samuel Shaw at the bottom of the page reads "Answered, and the papers returned to the man who brought them." Written at "Head Quarters." Washington's signature clipped.
