At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Placing Knox in charge of certain affairs of govenrment, because he is going on "a journey to the Southern States." Gives Knox orders regarding various military actions, including troop recruitment, hostilities "against the indians." and treaty issues with the Creeks. The last one or two pages of the letter are missing.
