At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lee and Perkins, merchants in Dartmouth, promise to pay Knox £13.16.11 on demand with interest. Docket on verso is signed by Knox and dated 11 October 1790. Knox was asking that they pay his agent, Joseph Peirce, on order.
