At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Confidential." Apologizes for not answering Knox's letter sooner. Discusses his difficulty in keeping to his part of the contract with Knox. Is unable to find funds to buy a tract of land. Describes his circumstances and why he is unable to buy the land as he had hoped. Also discusses his future and the likelihood of his imprisonment and the effect it will have on his family.
