At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain David Cook turns to Knox to help him "advance [his] commutation." The recent "resolve of Congress" prohibits Cook from getting his friends to help him. Cook tells Knox that the problem is that "they say the Commutation amounts to more, then the arrears of pay due me." Cook has sent his own calculations for Knox to consult.
