At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies that "the ship Massachusetts, now riding at anchor in the harbor of Boston, and commanded by Job Prince, is, together with her cargo, all and every part, owned entirely, and commanded by officers, citizens of the United States, and navigated for the most part by the same - the whole being under my direction."
