At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses military matters, possibly related to gathering troops to march to Fort Pitt. Remarks, "Lt. Pratt went of [sic] with a heavy Heart he hoped to have seen you- he has been very industrious & indefatigable-" (Pratt was gathering men to march to Fort Pitt and was disappointed in his own pay and the lack of pay granted to some of his men; refer to GLC02437.04013).
