At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First part, addressed to Benjamin Franklin, introduces a gentleman, Jeremiah Platt, "who has just returned from a long exile of seven years, in which period he has in every instance approved himself a ... upright citizen of the republick ... " The second part, addressed to John Adams, also serves as an introduction to the same gentleman.
