Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Provision return signed by Captain Lillie, an aide-de-camp to Major General Knox, for one sargent and three privates of Colonel Marinus Willet's regiment for four days of provisions. A total of sixteen rations were issued. Docket signed by a Sargent James Shaw stating that contractors delivered the rations.
