At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Provision return for eight men of the 2nd Regiment of Artillery. A total of 48 rations for six days is provided to the men from the 23rd to the 28th of July, 1783. In addition to Wetzell, the document is signed by Major Sebastian Bauman and Samuel Shaw, Aide-de-Camp to General Henry Knox. A docket on verso acknowledges receipt of the contractors for New York and New Jersey.
