At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Edward Blake, quarter master, and countersigned by Samuel Shaw as aide-de-camp to Henry Knox. Eight rations issued to one man to carry him to Boston from the first to the eighth of July 1783. A receipt note on the verso is signed by John Harwood.
