At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Knox that the Board of War has created a new position, the Deputy Field Commissary of Military Stores for the Southern Army. The Board wishes him to let a Mr. Thomas Jones know that they have appointed him to the position and to have Knox help him if he needs it. Written at the War Office.
