"The enemy had all passed through the town in retreat from Gen Averells who had given them a severe whipping at Droop Mountain seventeen (17) miles beyond Frankfort I had no engagement We captured the enemys Camps with tents knapsacks provisions &c also one Caisson & over a hundred of fine cattle I have sent Cavalry in pursuit - The enemy are in rapid retreat & had a good start we have some prisoners Gen Averell is now coming into the town"
