At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram to Brigadier General Scammon of the 23rd Ohio. "I have arrested a S Edwin…for aiding the enemy…I took from his farm five (5) Horses and mules also three (3) negroes…Shall I keep them or return them when I have done with them? He is rich and a very mean secesh…."
